Can you guess where this is?

Ok, so I admit that I know nothing about the 2014 Winter Olympics location.  Other than knowing that it’s in Russia, it’s a complete mystery to me.  However, after seeing this video I was very pleasantly surprised at how lush and green it looks.  I know that it looks very different at the moment and in only a week, millions will be descending on the place to watch, compete in and celebrate the winter games.  I am SO excited!

The Vancouver winter games were pretty spectacular, or so I hear.  I was in Peru on a trek through the Andes during the last winter Olympics and although I was having my own experience of a lifetime, I was still very upset that I couldn’t be with my friends in Vancouver for the games.  I guess I made up for it by being in London for the summer Olympics in 2012.

Anyway, this year I plan to make up for all that I missed in 2010.  I just really hope that we get to see most of the events – so far I’m a little skeptical of how much will make it out as there seem to be some pretty tough restrictions on how many members of the media can make it in etc, but I have high hopes for whatever makes it across the ocean.  I don’t agree with the Russian anti-gay law but I hope that we can celebrate the lifes’ work of all the athletes during this time.  Lets not take this away from them as they deserve this time in the spot light and I wish them all the best.

So tighten those bindings and strap on those goggles, because this is going to a great month of winter sports!

Reincarnation :: The Barbican

Persistent Peril

While I was in grad school, I spend a lot of time around the Barbican.  There is this great market that has food from all areas of the world and it was a great place to grab a quick bite or gather picnic food.  I spend many hours with friends on grassy knolls along the Thames with a view of the Barbican and this video makes me appreciate it all the more.

London has a very interesting array of architecture thanks to its many wars, especially the Blitz, and therefore a video like this is special.  It may not be the most beautiful that I’ve posted, but I think it encapsulates the history of a place extremely well- and in a short amount of time.  Impressive, considering it goes back to 200 A.D.  How well could you tell 1800 years of history in only 3.5 minutes?

Reincarnation :: Surfs Up!

As I have just spent the last several weeks at the beach I can’t help but post this as my first video on the reincarnation of materials.

I haven’t been on a surfboard in several years, and when I am on one it’s only because I’m floating on a board waiting for a wave.  I usually fall off if I actually catch a wave.  It’s a work in progress for me.  Maybe someday I’ll actually get to ride a wave all the way in before ending up upside down in the water.  You never know- it could happen…

Maybe if I ever get good enough I could buy a board like this.  I’ve been on a wood board once, and its a completely different feeling from the manmade material boards that I’ve been on.  Maybe its just because its made of renewable resources, but I like the idea of using driftwood.  What else can you do with all the wood that washes up on beaches?

As it’s freezing out I’ll stick to dry land for now, but maybe when the weather warms up and I’m at a beach with surfable waves, maybe I’ll try again.  Until then I’m sticking to hot tea and thinking about water sports.

Starting Over

2014-glitter

Some how we are already in 2014- can you believe it?

I know that I usually post my theme for the month on the 1st, but due to celebrations with friends, I had to postpone my first of the month post.  Another alteration is that I’m going to be posting less this year just because of the lack of time.  People warned me that a blog takes a lot of energy and I didn’t listen to them.  So although I won’t be posting nearly as frequently as I have in the past, I will try to post at least once a week throughout the year.

And now for the theme for January…

As we are starting yet another year and I kind of beat the “new beginnings” thing to death last year, I’m going with the idea of old objects turning into something new and wonderful.  Consider it an object reincarnation.

So consider that old object of yours that you’re dying to get rid of – what it could become in the future?

Ohana :: “Goodbye”

Another year over.  How did that happen?  I’m at a loss as to how it is possibly New Years Eve again.

Joel McCarthy

I admit that this film is not actually a documentary, although its filmed as if it is.  I love this film for many reasons, but most of all it reminds me that even with the loss of people that have a special place in our hearts, they wouldn’t want us to stop living our lives.  It also reminds me that even when I feel too busy to live life, there are more important things than the daily grind and to find those special moments that make life worth living.

Here’s to a new year with more moments that make life worth living and a little less nose to the grindstone.  See you all in 2014!

Year in Review for 2013

I know that we have a few days until the year is officially over but I have a special video that I want to share with you for the New Year-  so, I’m doing a year review a little early.

I started this blog just over a year ago as a way to keep myself informed of the goings on in video production and so far so good.  It is a lot of work though and I’m not sure if I’m going to be able to keep up with it as frequently as I would like in the next year, but we shall see.

To close 2013, I want to share some of my favorites- again:

Ohana :: Holiday Workshop

Lumineux

Growing up, my mom always had us make all of our Christmas gifts for family and friends.  One year it was a watercolor painting for each person, another year it was homemade trail mix.  I think she did this for two reason- 1) it kept us busy during the school break and 2) most people on our list didn’t need yet more things, so making them something was both economical and original.  To this day I still enjoy making gifts for people.  The number that I make has decreased over the years but that allows me to put more time and thought into each individual project.

I like the idea of putting in time and effort into a gift- I feel that it has a lot more meaning when I receive homemade gifts and I hope that others feel the same.  This video reminds me of my own childhood and that special time around the holidays.

Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah (I know has already passed), Kwanza or just enjoy the season I hope the next few weeks bring you joy and happiness.
