‘Four minutes’ worth of Drawing

Earlier this year, I read The Old Man and the Sea, by Earnest Hemingway.  I thought it to be an interesting metaphor of life- the struggle and determination against the challenges of life and the support that we get from others.

by Marcel Schindler

I love this video interpretation of the book.  Plus, it makes me wish that I were better at drawing.

Giving Thanks

It’s that time of year again – when Americans sit down to eat copious amounts of turkey, dressing and pie, and then collapse on the couch to watch football.  It’s also the time when we remember what we are most grateful for as we gear up for the madness of holiday parties and spending half our quarterly income (or more) on gifts for our friends and family.

As the madness ensues, I try to keep in mind what this time of year is really about and the wise words of Mrs. Macauley from William Saroyan’s, The Human Comedy:

“You must remember,” she said, “always to give of everything you have.  You must give foolishly even.  You must be extravagant.  You must give to all who come into your life.  Then nothing and no one shall have the power to cheat you anything, for if you give to a thief, he cannot steal from you, and he himself is then no longer a thief.  And the more you give, the more you will have to give.”

Happy Thanksgiving!

music to my ears

Finding the perfect music for a video is always difficult.  At least for me.  I’m sure there are people out there who can either compose or find music without a second thought.  For me it’s one of the most frustrating parts of gathering material for my projects.  Recently, for the first time ever, I have found the perfect music that reflects my story just the way that  I want it to.

The taster tape for Out of Print (taster tape= a short film the purpose of showing a producer/investor/anyone who cares, what the potential film will look like) featured generic music that I found on a royalty free website. This is where I usually find my music- but after sifting through hundreds of songs and feeling like I still hadn’t found something that would fit the final piece. I gave in to second best.  I figured it was alright for the taster tape, but I wanted something better for the final piece.  Something original and that you would hear in an independent bookshop.

Enter: The Bookshop Band.  Yes, there is such a thing as a band called The Bookshop Band, and yes, they write and perform music to do with books.  Perfect!  Not only is the music perfect, but the band was kind enough to give me permission to use one of their newest songs- A Shop With Books In.  I found them thanks to the Chorleywood Bookshop.

If you have time, you really should check them out.  I’ve only included the song, A Shop With Books In below, but they really are worth hearing more of.

Premiering later this month…

My newest documentary, ‘Out of Print’ will be premiering in London later this month.  Not only will ‘Out of Print’ be screening, but also films made by my classmates at the University of the Arts, London.  Te see some of the amazing work produced by my peers, check out http://madocshow.com/ for links to the trailers.

I will post specific times and dates for my film soon, but for now, keep these dates in mind:

London College of Communication: 15th-21st November (Private View on 19th November 6-9pm)

Rich Mix: 3rd-7th December

And… Action!

I suppose ‘action’ isn’t a word that you commonly hear when making a documentary, but I do more than just documentary.  I have been known to create brand films, photograph for billboards and work on PR campaigns.

I took a few high school film classes and a college study abroad class where we had to make a video diary.  Next thing I knew, I was recruited into a freelance group at my university and promptly put on the video team (even though I interviewed for a PR position) and here I am today.

It’s not really the technology that fascinates me, although it is an important part of video production today. It’s the research of topics that I never thought I would get to study and the people that I get to meet.  Plus, I get to be creative and make something that I hope will make a difference to someone.

At the moment, I’m finishing up my latest film, ‘Out of Print’, a film about the way that the Internet is changing the way that we access the written word.  As someone who loves stories, books are of course a great love of mine.  This has been a great change of pace for me from my last few large projects- there were no prisons, construction sites or security clearances to worry about.  I’ve really enjoyed spending time researching something fun, as we witness one of the biggest changes in publishing since Gutenberg’s printing press.

What’s next, who knows.  Stay tuned for screening dates!
