I’d like you to meet…

April-2014

My reasons for this theme is two fold.  1) Because there are so many items that we come across everyday but hardly note who created them and 2) I’m coming to the end of a project and this theme has me thinking about the people behind the scenes.

I will share more about the latter soon but until then, here’s a salute to those people who spend hours to create works of art that we take for granted.

7 more days…

Can you guess where this is?

Ok, so I admit that I know nothing about the 2014 Winter Olympics location.  Other than knowing that it’s in Russia, it’s a complete mystery to me.  However, after seeing this video I was very pleasantly surprised at how lush and green it looks.  I know that it looks very different at the moment and in only a week, millions will be descending on the place to watch, compete in and celebrate the winter games.  I am SO excited!

The Vancouver winter games were pretty spectacular, or so I hear.  I was in Peru on a trek through the Andes during the last winter Olympics and although I was having my own experience of a lifetime, I was still very upset that I couldn’t be with my friends in Vancouver for the games.  I guess I made up for it by being in London for the summer Olympics in 2012.

Anyway, this year I plan to make up for all that I missed in 2010.  I just really hope that we get to see most of the events – so far I’m a little skeptical of how much will make it out as there seem to be some pretty tough restrictions on how many members of the media can make it in etc, but I have high hopes for whatever makes it across the ocean.  I don’t agree with the Russian anti-gay law but I hope that we can celebrate the lifes’ work of all the athletes during this time.  Lets not take this away from them as they deserve this time in the spot light and I wish them all the best.

So tighten those bindings and strap on those goggles, because this is going to a great month of winter sports!

Starting Over

2014-glitter

Some how we are already in 2014- can you believe it?

I know that I usually post my theme for the month on the 1st, but due to celebrations with friends, I had to postpone my first of the month post.  Another alteration is that I’m going to be posting less this year just because of the lack of time.  People warned me that a blog takes a lot of energy and I didn’t listen to them.  So although I won’t be posting nearly as frequently as I have in the past, I will try to post at least once a week throughout the year.

And now for the theme for January…

As we are starting yet another year and I kind of beat the “new beginnings” thing to death last year, I’m going with the idea of old objects turning into something new and wonderful.  Consider it an object reincarnation.

So consider that old object of yours that you’re dying to get rid of – what it could become in the future?

Making time for ohana

It’s that time of year again when chaos descends on us all and life seems to get even more hectic than usual.  All this because its the holidays.  Even those that don’t celebrate Christmas feel the impending stress as the number of parties increase exponentially and budgets tighten.

For many, the cause of stress comes from the mandatory time spent with family.  However, Family is the reason that I love this time of year.

Family-Gathering

Since I moved out of my parents house, this is one, if not the only time of year that my family puts time aside to spend quality time together.  We are lucky that we actually enjoy spending time together- well, for the most part.  This year I am especially looking forward to it as I have seen very little of my parents in the last 12 months.

I’m not Hawaiian but I love the word Ohana.  I love that doesn’t only address those that are related to us by blood, but can mean any group of people that you feel close to.  So after spending Thanksgiving with the extended family and looking forward to the upcoming weeks I’m dedicating this month to those people that mean the world to me- even if they sometimes drive me a little nuts.

Classroom Memories

Only a year ago I was turning in my final project for Grad school.  Now I’m still working on getting a full time job and working on several smaller projects to keep the creative juices flowing.  No one said it was going to be easy and it has been far from that since leaving the safety of school.

As an ode to that place that I have spent the majority of my life, I’m going

classroom

for this month’s blog theme.

One of the things that I love about documentary is the sharing of information while creating an art form . So this month we’re heading back to the memories of crowded hallways, passing periods and class timetables.  Happy November!

Finding an “Original”

As a type of artist, I would always like to think that I’m original in everything that I do.  In reality, a lot of my work begins to looks the same.  I prefer to think of it as personal style.

Just as others do in any field, I like to look elsewhere for inspiration to keep my work from looking too homogeneous.  I believe that original works are created by combining various elements that we find elsewhere:

October Banner

Same goes with creating ourselves as people.

Admittedly, there are the rare individuals who come up with something so original that they generate a frenzy of followers- all attempting to mimic this novel approach to something. I’m thinking of someone like Leonardo DaVinci who inspired a completely new approach to painting.  However, we have come a long way from Leonardo’s “The Last Supper” and “Mona Lisa” and found other ways to inspire the masses (smart phones, electric cars, fast food, etc.).

So for October, I’m dedicating this month to the original things that people do.  Perhaps these ideas or approaches won’t take off like a Renaissance painter’s, but there are some pretty inspirational creations out there all the same.

Gathering Season

I’m sure you saw it coming- at least one month that highlights food.  Can I really help talking about food?  It’s only what sustains us and that our lives ultimately revolve around.  Even if we don’t grow our own food or enjoy cooking it, everything we do in some way or another leads us back to food.

sept-harvest

I love this time of year.  The weather is still warm, but slowly cooling down in the evenings and the light has changed to a golden glow throughout the day- no more of that overly harsh and bright light that we have during the summer. It’s almost like the sun’s dimmer switch has been turned down.  The perfect light for filming without having to use a lot of lighting equipment to dull or brighten the scene.

This is also the time of year that we gather in our food to get us through the winter months.  Could I be any more obvious about how I chose my theme for this month?  Probably not, but I’m not apologizing.  I love the variety of produce in the farmers market and the idea that things are winding down slowly from summer.  As much as I love summer, I’m always ready to pull out my fall sweaters and soon it will be time to do just that.  But for now, I will enjoy my last few weeks of playing out doors in lighter layers and feel thankful for the harvest that is being hauled in from the fields- even if I’m not physically doing it myself.

I love food in all of its complexities and now seems the perfect time to celebrate this all important element of our lives.

As far as the eye can see…

I’m kind of on a travel roll right now- I mean come on, it’s summer!  This is the time when a lot of us take off and enjoy the warmer weather etc. etc.  so I’m wrapping up the summer with…

august-landscapes

I don’t think you actually have to go too far from home to admire landscapes, but they are something that I definitely notice when I’m the road.  Landscapes say so much about the place and the culture and therefore are difficult to ignore.  Not to mention they are pretty darn gorgeous a lot of the time.  So before we get back to seriousness of life and the weather starts to cool off, here is one more month of “exploring”.
