If I could be anywhere, I would be…

If I could be anywhere right now, I think I would choose to be here

or here

or here

or here

But instead I’m at home.  I can’t really complain because I really do like where I live, but sometimes you just want to get away and explore a new culture and place.  More to the point I’m looking for sun.  I never really got summer last year and the PNW isn’t known for it’s warm or sunny winters, so I haven’t really seen the sun in a while- except the amazing weather we had a few weeks ago.  I am more than ready to soak up some rays and feel warm again.

In the past I’ve traveled several times a year so being in one place for more than a few months is driving me nuts.  I just need to buck up and enjoy where I am for the moment- it’s something I’m working on but it isn’t easy when you’re used to being constantly on the move.

So to help with my “itchy feet” syndrome, I’ve been enjoying various travel videos, all of which I want to share with you.  Some are of places that I have been to and loved, and some are of places that I hope to someday visit.

Off to pack my virtual backpack.

April Showers Bring May Flowers…

… Or so the nursery rhyme says.  This year, the rhyme seems a little obsolete as everything seems to have bloomed extremely early.  None the less,  for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, May is that glorious month when Spring has most definitely arrived and Summer is suggesting its arrival.  It is also the time of year when we really begin to notice the new life popping up around us- flowers, animal babies are out and about etc.

Following this idea of renewal and creation, I’m celebrating the month with the theme

Made-by-Hand

So much of what we buy, wear, consume, is made by machines, but there is nothing like those items made carefully and lovingly by human hands.  Admittedly, not everything that we create without the assistance of machines looks or functions as well as we would like, but I think there is something special about handmade items.

So here’s to those creators and their craft, documented carefully by the lens of a camera.

Melting into spring

If you live in the Pacific Northwest you’re used to your fresh water supply trickling down from the mountains every spring and summer.  Now that it’s April the mountains are slowly beginning to defrost and the waterways are filling with

Spring-meltdown

Thanks to a plenty of snow this winter we should be set for until next year.

I’ve mentioned before that I love water sports and now that spring is here I’m going from snowflake to the ocean by talking about my favorite outdoor activities concerning water – some of them happily supplied by spring runoff.

Defying Convention

During the month of March

March--Art-Films

I’m talking not talking about painters such as Picasso or sculptors such as Michelangelo, I’m talking about a style of documentary film.  Documentary film is defined as recording and documenting a process, an event or an aspect of life.  There are no rules as to how artistic the storytelling process is.  Often we see documentary as a combination of interviews and b-roll such as we see on the news, but there are many ways to tell a story.  So this month, I’m looking at the alternative type of documentary- Art.

And the nominees are…

The Golden Globe Awards have come and gone, the BAFTA Film awards are in nine days, and the Academy Awards are in 23.  Actresses squeeze themselves into elegant gowns, fashion critics go wild and we hear the immortal words, “And the (insert award name here) goes to…”.

I think it’s safe to say:

February--awards-season

To celebrate, I’m dedicating February to documentaries that I think deserve an award or two- some already do have awards  And if you are wondering, I have seen all of these films all the way through-  I’m not just going off of the trailer.

Let the ceremonies begin!

The year ahead

Confession: I’m new to this whole blogging thing.  But you probably knew that.  Truth be told, I wasn’t really sure what I was getting into when I started this, but I’m starting to get the hang of it.  I’ve never been much for sharing my thoughts online, but I look at this more as sharing things that inspire my work and to share what I’m working on next.

To help me figure out what I’m going to post twice a week (that’s about as much as I can manage right now), I’m going to have a theme each month which the content should some how reflect, although many posts will probably overlap in theme at times.  What can I say- there is no such thing as one topic discussed in films.

So. January’s theme:

fresh start

Although not a very original theme as it is the beginning of a new year and all anyone talks about is their ‘fresh start’ on life for the next 12 months, I thought it was only appropriate.  I promise to try to keep it original and not post a ton of stories about someone’s re-birth after a personal crisis.  Although inspiring, these stories can get repetitive.  Especially if that’s the theme for an entire month.

Here it goes…

P.S. I reserve the right to change my idea of a new theme every month, or even the theme itself at any given time, but for now I’m sticking to it.
