You’ve probably heard of this film a lot recently because it’s been nominated for an Oscar and won awards at Sundance, so the fact that I’m talking about it probably doesn’t seem all that surprising. But I really do love this film and I think that it deserves all the praise that it’s receiving.

Fresh Start :: Full Moon

Technically Sunday was the full moon but I thought it was a good way to end the month.
Fresh Start :: Snow construction
by Schneestern
A clean slate of perfect snow becomes a state-of-the-art ‘skate park’. The camera work is gorgeous, but even better, this video shows a side of terrain parks that we don’t usually see.
Bring on the ski season!
Fresh Start :: Rushing water
by Andy Maser
This video is special to me for a several reasons:
- Dam removal is restoring the ecology and culture to Washington state- my home state.
- It reminds me of summer adventures in Rainier National Park and motivates me to head outside more.
- Last year I was part of a video project that delved into something related to this topic. Someday I will share more about the project.
- I’m a huge fan of water sports- swimming, sailing, rowing, kyaking etc. Ironically enough this video features river rapids, which I’m not a fan of, but I blame that on getting trapped under a raft during a rafting accident a couple of years ago. River rapids aside, I love rivers for their beauty, for giving us life and their ability to take us back to nature.
This film is a new start for rivers in Washington state, for the salmon and demonstrates how we’re looking back on our actions and attempting to restore something that we originally ruined.
A second a day
I’m a few days late, I know- I was out of town.

Not your typical year review, but I like that it celebrates everyday life and that it makes what we might consider ordinary, beautiful.
Here’s to 2012 and wishing you the best in 2013.
Chasing Ice
Check out the movie website and find where it’s screening near you at http://www.chasingice.com/
I don’t think there was anything I didn’t like about this film (yes, I saw the film in its entirety at the Sheffield Doc Fest last June)- except for the grave condition that our climate is in. Even if you aren’t interested in environmental documentaries, the cinematography is gorgeous and the story of how the team put their well-being at stake to capture these images is inspiring. I won’t say any more in case I spoil it for those of you who haven’t seen it. But I leave this question to you: What lengths would you go to to tell the world of something that you are passionate about?
‘Four minutes’ worth of Drawing
Earlier this year, I read The Old Man and the Sea, by Earnest Hemingway. I thought it to be an interesting metaphor of life- the struggle and determination against the challenges of life and the support that we get from others.
by Marcel Schindler
I love this video interpretation of the book. Plus, it makes me wish that I were better at drawing.
Mesmerised
Camera motion is just as important as the content in the shot. This inspired me… and mesmerised me…

music to my ears
Finding the perfect music for a video is always difficult. At least for me. I’m sure there are people out there who can either compose or find music without a second thought. For me it’s one of the most frustrating parts of gathering material for my projects. Recently, for the first time ever, I have found the perfect music that reflects my story just the way that I want it to.
The taster tape for Out of Print (taster tape= a short film the purpose of showing a producer/investor/anyone who cares, what the potential film will look like) featured generic music that I found on a royalty free website. This is where I usually find my music- but after sifting through hundreds of songs and feeling like I still hadn’t found something that would fit the final piece. I gave in to second best. I figured it was alright for the taster tape, but I wanted something better for the final piece. Something original and that you would hear in an independent bookshop.
Enter: The Bookshop Band. Yes, there is such a thing as a band called The Bookshop Band, and yes, they write and perform music to do with books. Perfect! Not only is the music perfect, but the band was kind enough to give me permission to use one of their newest songs- A Shop With Books In. I found them thanks to the Chorleywood Bookshop.
If you have time, you really should check them out. I’ve only included the song, A Shop With Books In below, but they really are worth hearing more of.
